Quitting after 50 years – John’s story

11th August 2026

Before joining the One You Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster Be[CR1.1] Tobacco Free programme, John had been smoking for around 50 years and was smoking approximately 40 cigarettes a day. After decades of smoking, he knew it was time to make a change for the sake of his health and wellbeing. Wanting to improve his future and break free from tobacco, he reached out for support to help him achieve his goal of becoming smoke free.

The Be Tobacco Free provides personalised support to help people quit smoking for good. Participants receive one-to-one behavioural support from experienced Health & Wellbeing Coaches, advice on stop smoking aids, including vapes and nicotine replacement products, and ongoing encouragement to help them stay motivated throughout their quit journey.

“My main reason for joining the programme was to stop smoking for my health. After smoking for so many years, I knew I needed to make a change. It wasn't something I felt I could do entirely on my own, so having the right support made all the difference.

“With the help of the programme, I gradually reduced the number of cigarettes I was smoking over time. I also used vaping as part of my quit journey, which helped me manage the transition away from cigarettes. Step by step, I reduced my smoking until I was finally able to stop completely.

“One of the most valuable parts of the programme was the support I received from my coaches, Meric and Toby. They were fantastic throughout the process, offering good advice, encouragement, and reassurance whenever things became difficult. Knowing that they were there to support me helped me stay focused on my goal and keep moving forward.

“Quitting smoking after so many years wasn't always easy, but having regular support and guidance helped me overcome the challenges along the way. The programme gave me the confidence and motivation I needed to stay committed to becoming smoke free.

“I have now stopped smoking for nine weeks, which is an achievement I am incredibly proud of. Reaching this milestone has shown me that it's never too late to make positive changes for your health. I feel pleased with what I have achieved and motivated to continue living smoke free.”

“One unexpected benefit has been seeing the money I previously spent on cigarettes add up. Rather than spending it on myself, I've enjoyed spoiling my grandchildren with some of the money I've saved, which has made the journey even more rewarding.

“My next step is simple: to continue staying healthy and well. I am grateful for the support I received and would encourage anyone thinking about quitting smoking to seek help. With the right support and determination, it is possible to make a change, no matter how long you have been smoking.”
